We are all indeed blessed to be witnesses to two Venus transits of the Sun; the transit of 2004 and 2012. There will not be another transit until 2117, that is 105 years! Venus’s occultations of the Sun often, but not always, occur in pairs spaced about 8 years apart with a century plus separating their appearance. Only certain generations are blessed to see a Venus transit. It is a rare astronomical event that excites astronomers. It was a desire to see the transit to make astronomical measurements that inspired the voyage of Captain James Cook to Tahiti in 1768 to see the June 1769 transit. To be totally amazed see Nick Fiorenza’s beautiful diagrams at his Venus Transit 2004-2012. site. Venus’s path in the sky is very complex and very significant as is Her retrograde phase. I’ll focus on Her spiritual and archetypal significance.
A small amount of information about Venus’s dual role and appearance as Evening Star and Morning Star will aid in vizualizing the pattern She creates in the sky. She is Earth’s altar ego, our twin in size and chemical composition, Earth’s Higher Self and She gifted us with our mental plane. Venus rises as a Morning Star only after She’s been in retrograde motion, appearing to be moving away from the Earth. She shines as the Morning Star for 260 days; close to 9 months, the time of human gestation too. She then disappears for about 50-60 days and reappears as the Evening Star, shining for another 260 days. The entire cycle takes about 584 days. In about 8 years or 5 cycles, Venus’s movement draws a pentagram in the sky. The pentagram contains the 4 elements, one appearing twice. According to astrologer and teacher, Erin Sullivan, Venus creates a mandala with Earth as the center. She says that in Egyptian hieroglyphics, the pentagram formed part of the word groups meaning “to teach”, to “bring up” as in rearing a child. In essence Venus’s movements embrace the Earth. What does she teach? She teachs us how to become more mindful, loving and wise, how to align our wills with our soul’s goals and to live in harmony.
As the Sun is our solor Logos, the Light which gives us life, the center of our solar system, a planet of the 2nd Divine Ray of Love and Wisdom, Venus’s union with the Sun is seeding more of this Ray on Venus, a planet of the 5th Ray of Concrete Knowledge and Science/Science of Mind. The soul purpose of the Sun in Gemini is harmonizing will with form through the intelligent application of Love/Essence. Gemini’s function is very Venusian as Venus is soul ruler. Venus now in Gemini “gives one the understanding of the spiritual purpose behind any relationship” say Alan Oken in his distillation of Esoteric Astrology by Alice C. Bailey. When evolving the personality ego, Gemini feels it must choose between 2 opposing positions. After growing into a soul centered focus Gemini’s Higher Mind always chooses both and then blends them into a harmonious third relationship. We are all growing, learning the soul centered Gemini archetype. It was the archetype seeded in 1761, 1769, 2002 and 2012. Gemini’s opposing sign, Sagittarius, was the archetype seeded in 1631, 1639, 1874,1882, and will be the archetype of 2117 and 2125. [The dates and signs are from astrologer,Cayelin Castell. Cayelin’s and Daniel Giamario’s Shamanic Astrology has emphasized the Venus archetype for many years ]. All signs must integrate the energy of their opposing signs. This integration is underscored in these two opposing signs. The soul purpose of the Sun in Sagittarius is gain control of the personality so that it becomes a lens for the soul’s goals-“I see the goal and then I see another” is the motto of Sagittarius. Venus in Sagittarius brings in the energy of Earth, soul ruler of the sign. This blending of 3 planetary energies carries/communicates messages of unity for the world and gifts of practical application for the needs of the Earth and humanity says Oken.
If you contemplate Venus and Her archetypes, their purpose and historical emphasis, you get a glimpse of our evolution and goals. There are many clues also in our cultural history; the emphasis on pyschoanalysis, cognitive therapy, the growth of the meditation movement, Buddhist philosophy, the development of the internet and increased communication, the Gaia movement. Now we even have apps to help us chart our growth in consciousness, a movement labeled “the quantified self”. Venus is continuing to gift Earth and humanity with mental abilities, insights and control of our world. She guides us in the process of aligning with planetary will, with linking mind, intuition, personality with soul. Her beauty is that She harmonizes. She is within each of us as are the archetypes of Gemini and Sagittarius. May She aid us in total acceptance and compassion of ourselves, our journey and each other.
Contemplate also that according to the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, recorded by Alice Bailey, the years 1926-2026 are a period of a “push” by the planetary Hierarchy to assist us in learning the laws of thought. The purpose is to bring about a realization of the nature of the soul. We are to learn to further develop the ability to concentrate, to be more receptive to intuition and to envision ourselves as Divine co-creators. The goal is that we learn to develop a “gentle stillness”. Pain and unhappiness come from our rebellion against what “is” in the present moment. Acceptance of each moment and ourselves frees us to perfect our gifts to humanity, to be the lenses through which the Divine is focused; to experience bliss and contentment. So be it.

The work of Cayelin and Venus’s journey as the archetype of Innana or Ishtar, shedding and reclaiming “veils” or clearing chakras and incorporating power is so useful that I’d like to share it in
